You don’t have to be Freud to figure out that woman are head over heels for shoes. It’s all about the colors, the shapes, the welcoming soft leather, and most of all, the endorphins our brain releases when we wear them. At some level, the shoes are a substitute of social statute, the right pair can give you power and confidence. If you go even deeper, your personality can be judged by the shoes you are wearing (This is no psychological feminist propaganda, there are several studies explaining quite nice how your shoes can tell if you are phlegmatic or choleric).
If you are a man, you can compare it with you addiction to gadgets. Let’s say you have a watch, a pretty decent one, it does what it’s supposed to, but you just saw a commercial for a heart rate included watch. You go search online and from website to website, you find a GPS watch, perfect for running. Then you just remember that a guy from the office just bought a ‘super watch’, with activity levels, progress plans, charts, graphics, “fireworks”, etc. You see what I mean? We ladies, are the same. It’s like a snowball, more ideas, more combinations, more shoes!
This weekend 2 of my Dutch friends and I visited Kunsthal Rotterdam – for the sake of shoe’s art. How can you miss a whole bunch of shoes (1900 – 2014) gathered in one place? The exhibition “S.H.O.E.S” – Sexy Heels Or Easy Sandals – counted (for our astonishment) 500 shoes including names like André Perugia, Salvatore Ferragamo, Manolo Blahnik and Christian Louboutin. Even if you don’t have a passion for fashion, you might feel like in a time traveling machine. The shoes (some of them with visible worn out marks, some of them still having the price tag attached) were merely shoes, rather small pieces of art, feminine Pandora boxes.
Ranging from Victorian boots to seductive slippers and from high heels to futuristic pieces, the exhibition was a delight. If you find yourself in Rotterdam any time soon, don’t forget to buy a ticket to ‘S.H.O.E.S.Head over Heels’. Kunsthal Rotterdam will be the host of these wonderful shoes until the 11th May 2014. I took (again) too many photos and I want to share them all with you, so here is the first part. Stay tuned for more exciting shoes!
